May 30, 1998... Chicago, IL... The Inaugural Route 66 Nationals was a smashing success, not in terms of smashing speed records as was Englishtown, but in terms of reaction to the facility. All the comments could be boilded down to this "this is the Best dragracing facility in the country.". As for performance it was a Pro Stock sweep for the home team. or teams were victorious in all three Pro Stock classes. Pro Stock was won by Mike Thomas (7.024/196.39mph) running over Warren Johnson (7.075/194.80mph). When you get left at the line by Warren its usually over but Mike found the performance to overtake him. In Pro Stock Truck it was Larry Kopp (7.772/174.37mph) running over Bill Henderson (7.887/171.55mph) giving Larry his third victory in four outing for the trucks. Pro Stock Bike was won by Matt Hines (7.296/184.02mph) running over Angelle Seeling (7.389/181.37mph) with a red light start. This is Hines third victory of the year.

May 17, 1998... Englishtown NJ... NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, John Force and Joe Amato powered by filters and spark plugs rewrote the record books. In the cool of the New Jersey shore Friday evening Force surprised everyone by blasting the Top Fuel and Funny Car speed record off the record books with a 323.35 MPH run. Force's comment "it scared me". The question was, could he back it up, within 1% as the rules require, with the remaining rounds of the event to be run in the heat of the day? First round Sunday provided the answer when Force ran 323.27 MPH. In the battle of which cars are the "KINGS" of the sport, Joe Amato responded by setting the Top Fuel speed record at 323.50 MPH and ultimately went on to defeat Cory McClenathan in the final round to capture his second in a row Top Fuel event Championship. John Force and the crew chief dream team of Austin Coil; Bernie Fedderly and John Medlen had the final say as Force defeated Jim Epler to take the Funny Car title and set the record at 323.89 MPH with and on board.
